Francis Sidney ARNOLD was born in Brandon, registered Thetford Q4-1894 4B:357. He was the son of Frederick James and Eliza ARNOLD (née FULLER).

1901 census...Aged 6, he was living at Lakenheath Station Cottages, Brandon with his father James [47] a plate layer on the railway, born Hockwold; his mother Eliza [45] born Hockwold; sister Julia F [13]; brother Ernest A [10] and brother Frederick J [2]. All these children were born in Brandon.

1911 census...Aged 16, he was still living with his parents and brother Ernest and Frederick at Lakenheath Station, Brandon. His parents are now recorded as Wilton born and the children as born at Lakenheath Sta. Frank and brother Ernest were farm labourers, Frederick was a scholar. 12 children had been born in this marriage, but 6 had died by 1911.

The pension card has his mother at "South View", Hockwold.


The 1st Norfolks history at this time has proven scanty. However Frank and 2 of his chums who died that same day were the only deaths for the battalion that week. They were in trenches just south of Mametz, the war diary says just that "Trenches shelled..3 killed and 2 wounded.
